Today’s home networks are more complex than ever before. The exponential increase in devices that can be interconnected is never-ending. Laptops, chromebooks, tablets, smartphones, your friends’ devices joining the Wi-Fi…it doesn’t stop there. Now with home automation and the internet of things (IoT), home security systems, appliances, pools & spas, HVAC, music & podcasts, and TV and gaming are all connect to the home Wi-Fi.
The problem isn’t the number of devices connecting to the home Wi-Fi, it’s that the devices have known security issues, and hackers are taking notice. In 2015 alone, cybersecurity experts discovered major flaws in some connected baby monitors, IP-enabled toys and even a connected car. There’s also a search engine to find IoT exploits. The inherent problem lies with the router you are using at home.
This complexity makes your home network look more like a small business, but without an IT staff. With hackers now viewing homes as “soft targets”, and with the increased number of insecure devices connecting, its only a matter of time before they find a way into your home network and exploit your sensitive information.
Home router firmware hasn’t change much over time. In early 2016, The Wall Street Journal looked at the security capabilities of the top 20 home routers. Only six of those had up-to-date firmware at that time, and just two of them had good password processes. The recent ASUS settlement with the Federal Trade Commision over the critical security flaws in their home routers is further proof that home router manufacturers don’t take security seriously. Today’s home router selections don’t offer you the flexibility to set up your network the way you see fit. They also don’t provide you visibility into the devices that are connecting to your network.
The biggest challenge facing home networks isn’t necessarily even security: it’s the lack of visibility into and control over the traffic. This is where Untangle can help. Unlike today’s home Wi-Fi routers, Untangle NG Firewall logs traffic for rich, robust reporting into every facet of what’s happening online: sites your kids are visiting, neighbors jumping on your wireless network, and your newest IP-enabled gadget phoning home. NG Firewall allows you to create rules for managing access to websites, applications, and content based on criteria like device, user, time of day, day of week and more. You can see the effect of those rules through drill-down reports that can be monitored via the 360° Dashboard, a single pane of glass view into what’s happening on your network.

You have a couple of options:
To run Untangle inline with your current Wi-Fi router, you need to install Untangle on your own server with 2 NICs or purchase a ready-to-go appliance like the u25 or u50. You’ll be deploying NG Firewall in bridge mode between your Wi-Fi router and modem.
To run Untangle as your Wi-Fi router, you’ll need to purchase a u25w, a Linksys WRT1900ACS, or a Turris Omnia router. The u25w is available pre-imaged with NG Firewall, so you’ll be ready to plug-and-play. The Linksys WRT1900ACS can be purchased pre-imaged through our partner, FlashRouters, or you can build your own router by following the instructions for flashing. The Turris Omnia router is available for purchase in Europe.
Whatever option you choose, you’ll want to be sure to get a license subscription for NG Firewall Complete. Choose “Home” under “Licensed Devices”. That way, you’ll have access to all the great features it provides. Learn more about NG Firewall Firmware Distribution.
