Here at Untangle we are extremely pleased to announce that version 6.1 is now available for download.  The highlight of the release is our new app, Commtouch Spam Booster, but there are several other significant upgrades and enhancements as well.  Please see the 6.1 changelog for a comprehensive list of everything new and shiny.

Commtouch Spam Booster

Commtouch Spam Booster is a new app that adds extra premium filters to Spam Blocker. When we first heard Commtouch’s claims of detecting over 98% of spam while still maintaining industry’s highest accuracy rates (source: Osterman Research), we challenged them straight away to put thier money where their mouth was.  But Commtouch’s Recurrent Pattern Detectionâ„¢ technology passed with flying colors.  It was really impressive to see the spam detection rates go up without increasing false postives when we first evaluated their technology on our corporate and test networks.  One cool feature in the Commtouch integration is that the GUI shows how many messages the Commtouch filters have specifically blocked, which makes it really easy for anyone doing a trial to see the exact value that Commtouch brings to their network.  And if you do decide to checkout Commtouch Spam Booster, pretty pretty pretty please tell us what you think!  Good, bad or indifferent, Dirk, Bob, Mark and I personally read every message that comes to feedback@untangle.com.

New Kernel and Installer

The Untangle Platform also got a major upgrade to increase security, hardware compatibility, software compatibility and over all reliability.  The biggest change was upgrading the the kernel to Debian Lenny (2.6.26).  However, the installer was also upgraded to Debian Lenny, which is overall a nicer “Welcome to Untangle” experience for newbies installing their first box, that also makes it easier to try foreign language packs for anyone that prefers to run Untangle in something other than English.
