Background
One of the difficulties of running a modern law practice is maintaining a secure, distributed network that still lends itself to being easy to use. Individual attorneys, while often in court or otherwise away from the office, need urgent access to email and centrally-held documents. The idea of calling someone in the office to email you that important document to your free web-based address or having someone fax it to you as you stand around the machine, scared to walk away because the incoming fax contains confidential client data, is archaic and costly.

Untangle’s Remote Access Portal has been a godsend to Sagaria Law, a San Francisco Bay area firm specializing in divorce and family law. Sagaria’s IT requirement is handled by an independent consultant, Nicolus Koshneviss.

Accessing Files From Anywhere
Nicolus is well aware of the practical and security difficulties of operating a Virtual Private Network that meets the needs of a growing law firm. “Sagaria’s attorneys need to access the firm’s network from remote locations including courts,” he says. “Budget was an issue, as was the necessity for a stable and secure, multisite solution. We thought about using Windows VPN client, but knew it wasn’t sufficiently robust, feature-rich, or secure for Sagaria’s needs.”

Then Nicolus tested Untangle and discovered that it provided the security, stability and simplicity his client needed. He used Untangle’s Remote Access Portal to provide anytime, anywhere, secure access to authorized employees using their laptops and mobile devices. Another one of the many features of the Untangle server that he used was Untangle’s OpenVPN solution to establish consistent “site-to-site” connections between offices. “It is very secure being SSL, plus I like how easy it has been to set-up.”

Sized Right
Two other features of the Untangle offering appealed to Nicolus: its capacity to save space and budget: “Sagaria operates from a top-floor office suite where square footage is expensive, so there isn’t a large computer closet for a ton of servers and appliances. The fact that the Untangle system is compact and handles so many functions is a big selling point as far as they’re concerned.”

As for the budgetary considerations, Nicolus has found Untangle’s all-in-one pricing structure invaluable in his relationship with his clients. “You know, it’s tough to keep going back to a client and saying ‘I need another five hundred dollars for this, and another five hundred for that.’ It turns me from being the good guy who solves their problem into the guy who just keeps asking for money.
